Four green spaces in the Borough have successfully gained Green Flag status.
The Green Flag Award Scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country.
The four green spaces are Epsom Common Local Nature Reserve, Ewell Court Park, Nonsuch Park and Alexandra Recreation Ground.
Councillor Jan Mason, Chairman of the Leisure Committee, said “The Green Flag Award scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK. I want to thank everyone involved in this achievement, professionals and volunteers”.
“Our green spaces are incredibly important to our residents and the work we have undertaken in the four winning sites can be duplicated elsewhere in the Borough. By carefully selecting the four sites that we nominated, comprising a park with sporting facilities, formal gardens, historic parkland and a local Nature Reserve, we now have templates to address the other green spaces in the Borough”.
Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: “A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the achievements of all those whose hard work and dedication has helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.”
As well as acknowledging the efforts of its own Rangers, Grounds Maintenance Team and Countryside Team, the Council would like to recognise those who have contributed to this successful application:
Epsom Common
• Epsom Common Association
• Glendale
• Ewell Court House Organisation (ECHO)
• Friends of Ewell Court Park
• London Borough of Sutton (with whom we joint manage the park)
• Friends of Nonsuch
• Nonsuch Watch
• Living Woodland Project/Nonsuch Voles
• Friends of Alexandra Park
• Martial Arts Studio (Nam Yang Martial Arts Association)
• Epsom Park Bowling Club

To gain Green Flag Award status, green spaces are judged on eight criteria
The judging also considers the fact that each green space offers different kinds of facilities, and will be managed and developed to varying opportunities and constraints. Innovation and the way facilities offered are tailored to the needs of the community are also taken into account.
Applying for, and gaining, Green Flag award status reflects the Council’s key priorities of visual appearance, safer and stronger communities, sustainability and managing resources, details of which can be found in the Epsom & Ewell Borough Council 2012-2016 Corporate Plan
We are THRILLED to announce that Nonsuch Park has been awarded a “Green Flag” by a national award scheme which recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country.
This is a huge achievement and testament to the ongoing hard work of all of the Councillors and volunteers that look after our parkland home including Friends of Nonsuch and Nonsuch Watch,
