Come and see the Nonsuch Palace Model

Posted By the Nonsuch Mansion Team on February 3, 2012

A quick reminder to make sure you come and see the elaborate large-scale model of Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace in the  Service Wing Museum here in Nonsuch Mansion, Nonsuch Park.

nonsuch-palace-model-2.jpg.display

The model shows intricate detail of the Tudor masterwork, which was reputed to be the most luxurious residence in England, if not Europe. The superb model was built in 1,250 hours by master modelmaker Ben Taggart, who has also made models for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum. It was commissioned by volunteer group Friends of Nonsuch, in a project led by Professor Martin Biddle from Oxford University after he dedicated years to researching the palace’s history. Professor Biddle was an undergraduate when he directed the excavation of the site, in Cuddington, in 1959. He has spent years painstakingly analysing written and illustrated evidence, as well as pouring over surviving fragments of stucco and slate, in preparation for the creation of 2.2m by 1.2m (7.2ft by 3.9ft) model.

The real palace is long gone and the site is at the north end of Nonsuch Park, far from the mansion. About 1,300 fragments of carved slate were found during an excavation of the site in 1959, along with a variety of royal badges, three busts of Roman emperors, trophies of arms, and figures. It was built by Henry VIII in the 16th century to keep up with the extravagant palaces of the French king, Francis I.

The friends group, which raised all the money for the project, hopes the model will mean it is enjoyed by generations to come.

The model is on public display between 17 September and 5 November, find full opening times here.

Nonsuch Pantry, the little cafe beside the mansion, has been making the headlines. First we were we picked as a “Favourite UK Picnic Spot”by BBC Masterchef judge Monica Galetti (see here) then we were mentioned by comedian and Cheam resident Tim Vine in The Sunday Times.

Now we’ve had a full write up in Surrey Life Magazine’s “On the Tea Shop Trail” column. Thanks to everyone who suggested that they come and see us! Read below or visit http://surrey.greatbritishlife.co.uk/ to order your copy.

A Beautiful Winter Wedding

Posted By the Nonsuch Mansion Team on December 12, 2011

It’s hard to believe that this time last year we were covered in snow! It just goes to show that you can’t plan for British weather at all!

Here are some lovely photos from Laura and Jon’s wedding taken by Lloyd Dobbie (http://www.LloydDobbie.com)

The mansion was full with lit fires, hearty food, so many smiles and lots of servicemen in uniform too. Beautiful. You can see more photos of their day on Lloyd Dobbie’s blog… http://www.lloyddobbie.com/2011/12/winter-wedding-at-nonsuch-mansion-2/

Breaking Dawn Twilight Themed Wedding Shoot

Posted By the Nonsuch Mansion Team on November 20, 2011

“I am thrilled, excited, proud and absolutely delighted to share this {Twilight} Breaking  Dawn styled shoot with you ~ yes you, my lovely loyal readers. For the last couple of months I plotted and I planned every aspect of this shoot. I lay awake at night pondering how Edward & Bella’s wedding may look, I agonised over every tiny detail thinking ‘what   will make this shoot even more twilight inspired?’. You see, I wanted to create something extra special, that beautiful something that brides-to-be would love and feel inspired by {even if they weren’t a Twilight fan}… and I definitely didn’t want my Twilight inspiration       to look cliched or dare I say it, tacky… So, I started to contact the most talented and amazing suppliers, suppliers who are renowned for their outstanding quality of work and I asked them if they’d be interested in helping me create this, thankfully, they all said yes…”

Behold: this is what happens when twenty of the top suppliers are brought together by one amazing wedding stylist: Sonia from Want That Wedding.
Sonia’s mission was to recreate the most famous wedding of 2011 (no not that one, the other one!): the marriage of Bella Swan to vampire Edward Cullen from the book (and film) Twilight: Breaking Dawn. This was a very British vampire shoot (held at dusk of course) with photos captured by Chanelle of Sergerius Bruce.
You can see the entire shoot on two blog pieces over on Sonia’s inspirational blog Want that Wedding

I took my inspiration from the twilight novels visualizing how Edward and Bella’s dream nuptials could translate into reality. Edward was turned into a vampire in 1918 so I wanted to reflect the Art Nouveau period, you can see this in the style of the wedding stationery and wedding cake created for the shoot…. To complete the look I chose a dramatic Georgian Mansion as a backdrop for this Breaking Dawn styled shoot to add an old fashioned English twist. The result ~ I think you’ll agree is an incredibly romantic, intense and vintage inspired {Twilight} Breaking Dawn styled wedding shoot.
